The East Side Kids
Eight DVD Set!

This historic, black-and-white collection of sixteen feature films and three, twelve-episode movie serials display the East Side Kids, Dead End Kids, and Little Tough Guys in all their glory: peppy, street-smart, junior detectives with a lot of sass and brass, whether they’re smoking out ghosts, murderers, gangsters, turncoats, or undercover agents.  They might carry chips on their shoulders, but when it comes to protecting the land of the brave and the free, the U.S. (and the ‘hood) can have no more devoted defenders!

Digitally Restored

Movie List
Little Tough Guy (1938)
Twists and turns mark this st2ory about a boy enraged at his father’s death sentence for a murder he didn’t commit.  To vent his anger at the world for his father’s unjust execution by electric chair, Johnnie serves up his own brand of justice.  He turns criminal himself and forms a rough gang.

They Made Me a Criminal (1939)
Heavyweight boxing champion Johnny has tried to maintain a good public image, but a nosy reporter threatens to expose his dirty little secrets. When the reporter takes a lethal whiskey bottle to the head, Johnny becomes the prime suspect for the murder.  A body in a fiery crash is misidentified as his and he takes advantage of the mistake, but a down-on-his-luck cop looking to redeem himself follows his nose and finds Johnny hiding at the Rancho Rafferty Date Farm in Arizona where he’s trying to help Granny Rafferty and the Dead End Kids save the farm.

East Side Kids (1940)
Former street gang member Patrick O’Day has grown up and become a cop. He wants to exonerate “Knuckles,” his old friend from his street days, who was falsely convicted of murder, before his upcoming date with the electric chair.  Things go awry, and Pat is discharged from the police force before he can prove his friend’s innocence.  “Knuckles’” kid brother gets mixed up with a counterfeiting ring and accidentally discovers the evidence that could save his brother from death row!  This gritty film is the first installment in the East Side Kids franchise and stars different actors from Leo Gorcey and crew that made the series famous.

Boys of the City (1940)
The boys just want to cool off on a hot day.  They open a fire hydrant, which lands them in juvenile court and another one of their trips to “keep out of trouble.”  They find themselves stranded at a spooky estate, complete with sliding bookcases, creepy organ music, a crazed housekeeper … and murder!

Pride of the Bowery (1943)
Danny “tricks” Muggs and the crew into joining one of FDR’s Civilian Conservation Corp camps to get smart-mouthed Muggs in shape to box.  Another camp member named Willie tells the boys he needs money to help his sick mother.  A sucker for sick mother stories, Muggs takes to the boxing ring to try to win money for Willie but loses the match.  When Willie steals money from the camp safe, hot-headed Muggs is blamed, and Danny has to fight to prove his friend’s innocence.

That Gang of Mine (1943)
When the gang’s clubhouse is closed for repairs, Danny moves his crew into stable where Muggs gets inspired to become a jockey. Then the gang meets Ben (Clarence Muse), an old man who happens to own a champion racehorse.  He agrees to let Muggs ride in the big race, but first, Muggs has to get over his fear of riding Blue Knight, the champion racehorse, and the gang has to raise money to pay the race’s entry fee.

Bowery Blitzkrieg (1941)
Danny has what it takes to be a boxing champion but must choose between that and going to school. With his future hanging in the balance, he becomes involved with petty crooks and is disqualified from the big tournament. His behavior contributes to Muggs’ being sent to reform school.  A friendly cop gets Muggs paroled to him and helps him train to take Danny’s place in the fight, but complications arise when gangsters pressure Muggs to throw the fight.  Will Muggs and Danny succumb to the dark side or fight their way to better prospects? Keye Luke appears as Clancy, the pool-hall manager.

Flying Wild (1943)
As the kids do their patriotic duty working at an aircraft factory, Muggs overhears a conversation that convinces him that one of the gang’s coworkers is transporting wartime secrets to the Enemy!  They try to blow the whistle but nobody believes them.  So they decide to handle the matter themselves.  They’ve done it before … right?

Spooks Run Wild (1938)
A “Killer Monster” is on the loose in the woods.  When their pal Peewee is shot, the East Side Kids seek refuge in the creepy Billings estate occupied by the weird Nardo (Bela Lugosi in his “Dracula” outfit) and his strange little sidekick, Luigi. When Peewee begins stalking through the mansion in a trance, the gang is convinced that Nardo has turned him into a zombie.  Thinking Nardo must be the “Monster Killer,” they gang up on him and subdue him.  But then they find out just how wrong they are!
Let's Get Tough! (1943)
The attack on Pearl Harbor outrages the East Side Kids and they want to swing back.  They try to enlist, but they aren’t fooling anybody—they’re too young to qualify. Frustrated, they take their troubles out on a Chinese shopkeeper, believing him to be Japanese.  When the shopkeeper turns up dead, the East Side Kids atone for their mistaking him for Japanese by uncovering a real network of dangerous Japanese spies.

Mr. Wise Guy (1942)
Why does everyone blame them for anything bad that happens?  The Bowery Boys are wrongly convicted of boosting a truck and get shuffled off to reform school! To make matters worse, Danny's brother is framed for a heinous murder and is sentenced to death row!  How will Muggs and the Gang prove their innocence and save Danny’s brother from behind bars?

'Neath Brooklyn Bridge (1942)
Muggs and the gang hide a young woman accused of murder in their clubhouse while they try to find the real murderer.  Their plans backfire when fingerprints on the murder weapon point to one of the Gang as the culprit!

Clancy Street Boys (1943)
In order to get financial assistance from rich Uncle Pete, Muggs' widowed mom has pleaded poverty and seven kids.  But then a letter arrives from Uncle Pete announcing his impending visit and expectation to meet Muggs and his six siblings.  Muggs’ loyal crew covers his back, playing the parts of his non-existent siblings, including his “sister” Annabelle, an impersonation hilariously acted by Glimpy.  But then a gangster threatens expose the charade unless he gets a cut of Uncle Pete’s loot.

Ghosts on the Loose (1943)
When the East Side kids set out to repair a house Glimpy’s newlywed sister and her new husband bought sight unseen, strange goings-on at the house next door lead them to believe that it’s haunted!  Bela Lugosi appears in this story of secret panels, ghostly noises, and Nazi spies.  A very young Ava Gardner also puts in an appearance.

Kid Dynamite (1943)
NYC East Side’s boxing champion Muggs McGinnis is set to fight in a challenge match against the West Side champion but is kidnapped before the fight. Tournament runner-up Bobby takes his place... and wins! But Muggs believes Bobby is behind his kidnapping and sets out on a misguided course for revenge.

Million Dollar Kid (1944)
